[ red_a02 ] Shuzhen – The first episode was a lot of fun, cos it had an interesting cocktail of sexual tension and smooth fight choreography. This episode is like the awkward aftermath...

[ vermilion_2 ] YAPX – I understand that most of your stories are dialogue-based and heavy on retorts and counter-retorts. This one felt unnecessarily circular. It starts with a cool premise: a killer/villain/vigilante uses Lent to swear off something that should be second nature to him (I suppose), and then talks about a story. The link between the two (giving up killing & the story) isn’t a 100% fit. Maybe instead of “let me tell you a story”, it could be “hey, you see I even passed a guy up for death today!” or equivalent. Something to drag Lorelei into the banter and the premise. // That’s my only complaint. I’m not a big fan of dialogue-based stories, but I can make a exception for this.

[ 130204 ] YAPX – Good pace, good characters, great dialogue. The thing I like best is a combination of the three: how you build up their pseudo-relationship through all that back-and-forth exchange. Somehow, you craft a unique, strange relationship: from any one point in the story, both of them are manipulative, victimised and hypocrites - though not all at once. // On word choices, I felt you could change the word “janitor” (“cleaner” or “uncle” would’ve given a different, but more acute local flavour to it). Mostly because, it’s connotes an added level of difference through: class. Whether or not you intended it, by portraying the “janitor” and “student” you bring out the fact that he’s stuck there socially in all sense of the word. It made the part where he says he reads books during weekends completely out-of-context and weird. // Also, there’s too much “sliding” in and out of the room. Not sure if that’s intentional repetition, or just a lack of other words. // I thought that the girl’s own background is pretty compelling. Even after everything, I can’t tell if she’s speaking the truth. Because I’m all for unreliable narrators and characters, I can still find her well-thought out. But other readers might lose patience or wonder at her sudden change of heart at the final moment.

Ping.sg is the only reason I blog.
20 Pi♓es 2k8, Thor’s Day ♣

When Priss first tuned me into ping, I was totally blown away by the concept of the Top 10. I found it so fascinating that I went and coded an RSS feed for the sole purpose of joining in the fun.

I don’t use Ping for the traffic. Any time I hit the Top 10 I get at most 200 hits from ping. At a generous $0.20 CPM that comes up to $0.01. With the falling US$, that’s *insert witty analogy here – it’s almost 5am*. Admittedly, I got 10k hits from Edison Chen via Ping, and that comes up to a grand total of $2.00. So let’s just agree that it’s peanuts.

The point of being in the Top 10 is simply to be in the Top 10.

After Grievous’ analysis, not being able to sleep, and my position on coming up with credible solutions instead of whining about it, I’ve come up with some suggestions to make Ping more insular.

The reason for this is because, while tracking the progress of my posts up the totem pole, I actually read some of the posts. The majority of them I find to be banal, the ones worth reading are invariably reposted from somewhere else. My point is, it can’t get much worse. So here goes -

Lower the threshold for poofing. Some entries are total crap and they still get by. In fact I don’t think I’ve ever seen a poof’d post except for Priss, Berry Berry, entry on Ping having a virus – which was uberpoofed by Uzyn (rightfully so, I might add). Or is the reason I cannot see them being that they’ve been poofed? Who knows.

Change the favorites to link to users instead of directly to the blog. This will allow people to more easily pong their favourite bloggers.

Penalize people for getting too many poofs. Seriously, one guy was posting porn galleries. This would be okay if it was good porn, like say, Maria Ozawa (whom I’m not fond of but for some reason is Google’s top keyword right now, so people must like her).

And, come to think of it, which idiot is actually setting up new porn sites? Talk about entering the most crowded marketplace ever. You might as well come up with Yet Another SEO site.

rel=nofollow or removing Ping from search engines entirely. Ping, by virtue of its Page Rank, basically gives everyone a Google boost – thus explaining my 10k hits from Edison. No Google boost means less reason for people to sign up for traffic, though, admittedly, the ease with which to sign up and set up auto-ping makes it not much of a deterrent. Still, it sends a strong message.

Auto-pongs! Let people get auto-ponged from everyone who has added them to favorites – perhaps at a fractional pong rate. This essentially rewards the popular people.

Have levels. Reward people for participating in events, the forum, the shoutbox or whatever it is makes the “true users” “true” by giving their pongs greater weight or reserving the auto-ping feature for >lvl2. This is probably the most balanced. Both Yahoo Answers! and eBay have restricted features for new users, basically forcing participation.

I understand Uzyn’s desire to the let the community dictate the rules, but even forums have moderators. It’s unfair to the “true users” that they have as much right as someone who’s just signed up. Unfortunately, giving too much power to users is usually a bad idea, because nobody likes people to come shit on their turf.

These are some suggestions to maintain the purity of blood. Personally, I find nothing more annoying than a mutual wankfest, but my empathy is to those who want things to stay the same. If you think Ping should protect its most hardcore members, and you think these may help, go tell Uzyn. If you think these suck, go tell a mirror. If you think I’m entirely missing the point (and I do note that Grievous' post was a rebuttal to those who feel that v1.80 is kowtowing to the "true users")... you know what, think whatever you want, just as long as I don’t have to hear about it.
